On the 14th of June, NDWM Tamil Nadu joined over 500 domestic workers to celebrate International Domestic Workers Day at Loyal College in Chennai. During the first half of the day, presentations were given by keynote speakers such as MLAs, trade unionists, and domestic workers’ leaders. Domestic workers recounted stories of  empowerment and organization in the midst of overwork and exploitation.

While I was in Bangkok for the Asia-Pacific Regional Consultation on the UN HLD, I had the opportunity to speak with Andy Hall, human rights defender, migrant workers specialist and MFA partner. I asked Cate about the Diplomacy Training Program (DTP), issues facing Nepali migrant workers, and her experience working at both the regional and grassroots level.

Harrison Ellis - Blog 2: This Took Me Over a Month to Post

Post type:
Blog post

Please enjoy my attempt at coherently articulating my initial impressions on Manila, evolving perspectives on privilege, and scattered ramblings on my first month and a half as a CAPI intern in the Philippines.

The First Morning

I awoke at six am after sleeping for maybe four hours. The inescapable sounds of traffic, dogs barking, roosters crowing, and the crosscutting tricycle engines were an exceptional wakeup call. Resting would have been a safe decision but it was my first morning in the Philippines and exploration was a more pressing matter.

The second day of my internship as a Program Assistant at the Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) has come to an end. A general synopsis of one of the programs I am fortunate enough to be working on would make for an appropriate first entry.  So far I have been instructed to help MFA prepare for the upcoming High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development as well as their Domestic Workers Program (DPW).
