Jacquie Day - Blog Post 5: Living and Learning and Returning Home

Post type:
Blog post

It’s different writing about India from back home in Victoria. The two feel hard to compare. The weather alone makes it feel like a different world. I thought perhaps nostalgia may have set in by now, but forgettably, coming home makes home seem so comfortable and familiar. I know India taught me so much, that I can’t possibly recall it all now. Much of it will set in one moment at a time. Home in a way is relieving. One thing I had missed most, was the anonymity I grew to enjoy. I am no longer a visibly different person in a culture outside my own.

Jacquie Day: Blog 4 - The Privilege of Place and the Experience of Placelessness

Post type:

Reflecting on the last 5 months, I have had some profound learning experiences in Kerala, India. Though, not in the way I had expected. I learned so much about my own social position of privilege, and continued to navigate my way through what India was teaching me. Close to the end of my internship, I ask myself-what has been my most profound learning- and what will I take home with me?

Jacquie Day - Blog Post 3: Women, Safety, Tradition and Experience

I learned early on in my time here, that there is a big difference between what people can do, and what people don’t do. In Kerala, tradition and patriarchy is rich and strong, and this is enough reason to behave or not behave in certain ways.

Upon arrival in Trivandrum, I was told that women can’t go out at night, women can’t buy alcohol, women can’t go out alone, etc.

Jacquie Day - Blog Post 2: Rickshaw Riding 101

Post type:

Riding in rickshaws is very much part of my everyday life and continues to be a space of navigation. I was inspired by my fellow CAPI intern; Sonia who is living in Delhi and recently visiting her there gave me greater perspective and allowed me to become more curious about my own rickshaw (aka, Autorickshaw, Auto, or Tuktuk) experiences.

Jacquie Day - Blog Post 1: Learning to Live in New Lands: First Impressions

Well, I’m here. Believing it or not. Part of me is in belief, and the other part dis.  It’s strange to be here, without really the intention of traveling. To have to settle into life in Trivandrum feels oh so foreign. It is more conservative here than I had anticipated. Though I was told this, I really didn’t know what it would feel like, to instantly have some freedoms not granted. First of all, there is no nightlife in this city.
