Beaudin Bennett - Blog Entry 3: Dhaka When the Sun Goes Down

Post type:
Blog post

The road is deserted.  A vast expanse of asphalt and not a single car or bus to spoil the sight.  Flat and empty.  Almost lonely.  This isn’t a Manitoba secondary highway on a summer Sunday evening.  This is Dhaka at 3 am in April.  And for once there is no traffic in view, no diesel fumes hanging thick in the air, and no horns to test your sanity.

Jamie Myrah - Blog 2: It's Time to Make Friends with Facebook

Post type:

Moving to India has reinvigorated my love affair with Facebook. It has become a lifeline to home - the easiest way to share pictures and updates of my adventures abroad; to chat with friends and family; and to generally stay in touch with the people and issues I care about. Email, phone calls, and even video-calling still play a role, but the interactive nature of Facebook, combined with it's functionality and diverse applications, easily make it the most important communication tool I have at my disposal.

Jamie Myrah - Podcast 2: Rays of Hope: Bringing Light to the Shadow of Patriarchy in India

Post type:
Blog post

Hello... welcome to my second podcast, a reflection on some of my experiences of patriarchy in India. Insipired by a recent incident I witnessed on the street in Delhi, I contemplate my own relative safety in this notoriously unsafe city, giving consideration to some of the complex factors that make women vulnerable to violence. Based on some of my work at PRIA I also discuss why I'm hopeful that the dream of equality is as alive and well in India as anywhere else in the world.

Victor Huynh - Podcast 2: The Magic of Labour Day

Post type:
Blog post

Here is my second podcast.  For this podcast, I talk about my experience participating in MFI's 3 days of Labour Day activities.  On the first day, I did a presentation on India's Emigration Act and engaged with labour minsters in a discussion about the current conditions of labour migration in India.  Although an intimidating experience, I gained a lot of perspective on social culture, political culture and myself.

Beaudin Bennett - Blog Entry 2: The Road to Rangpur

Post type:

Like many good adventures, it started with a late night phone call.  I was in bed, watching a movie on my laptop and basking in the privilege of privacy, enjoying the feel of clean feet on flannel sheets and gloating at the impotent buzzing of insects outside of the mosquito net.

Harrison Ellis - Podcast 2: Interview with Cate Lawrence

Post type:

I had the pleasure of catching up with past MFA intern Cate Lawrence in early April. Cate is continuing her work in the migrants' rights field with Pravasi Nepali Coordination Committee (PNCC), an MFA member organization in Kathmandu, Nepal. I asked Cate about the Diplomacy Training Program (DTP), issues facing Nepali migrant workers, and her experience working at both the regional and grassroots level.
