He sat at the table with a blood-splattered shirt. My eyes wandered up and down his body, noticing what looked like thick red paint on his ear. I am not sure what was more strange to me: that a man with a bloody shirt was eating breakfast at my side or the casual air that everyone had about the whole situation. For the sake of context, let’s go back to early morning when my host, Rifat awoke me:

“It’s time for the sacrifice, get up!”

For my third podcast, I discuss the recent typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) and its disastrous effect on the Visayas in the Philippines. National and international relief efforts are underway, but it's clear that even after the victims' immediate needs are met, rebuilding will be a long and arduous process.

Join me for an interview with a woman who challenges gender barriers and expectations. I perceive Rifat as a strong woman and I particularly enjoyed hearing her talk about empowerment. While Bangladesh is known for its traditional views about women and marriage, Rifat reminds us that things can change.

Natalia Yang - Podcast 2: How to Make Kitchiri

In my 2nd podcast, I share my experiences learning how to cook Bangla food in the kitchen of my co-worker, Marina. Kitchiri is rice and lentils, flavoured with garlic, ginger, bay leaves, tumeric, cardamon, chilis and salt, then cooked with oil and water.
