Working with MSRI for the last month and a half has taught me so much about myself, and what the world has to offer. I cannot begin to imagine what experiences and challenges the next couple of months will bring. I chose the Education Intern position in hopes that I might occasionally be able to visit the school and connect with some children. I never imagined the complexity of this position now that I am familiar with it.

Malaysia is an extremely racialized society. Walking around Kuala Lumpur, it is impossible not to notice the fragmentation and construction of some of the city’s many neighbourhoods according to racial division. In Ampang Point, the neighbourhood in which I reside, I can see three distinct communities on my walk to work alone (Malay, Arab, Korean). Walking around is one method of rudimentary observation, talking about it with those who experience it is another. And that’s just it; it’s impossible to avoid the topic in conversation.

Becoming familiar with a new place involves learning about new cultures, trying new food, and becoming familiar with a new locality. For me, getting to know a new place also involves an understanding of how actions indirectly or directly intersect with local people and ecologies. More specifically, this means reflecting on the ways in which my presence in a place requires the support of local people as well as the environment.
