Rachel Barr - Blog 3: Disconnection and resislency

My understanding of the lived experiences of girls and women in Sonipat and Panipat and the settlements that surround it would be dismal if all I did was sit and read reports about the area. My time out in the field was a stark reminder of how imperative participatory research and action is. If I had spent my whole internship reading government reports, I would tell you there is ample support and resources for women and girls living in these settlements.

My third blog entry also marks the completion of my third month in India. During these past three months I've been learning more and more about social issues in India, and the work happening at PRIA. I want to take the time now to share some of my experience learning about one particular issue PRIA is taking on: child marriage.

Greetings earthlings!

I imagine most people can relate to the bittersweet feeling of sitting in an airport, sharing space with thousands of hurried others, getting ready to return home from travels of some variety. Stressed out parents, conked out kids, delayed travelers asleep on the floor, everybody vying for the last remaining outlet like it’s a quidditch match. Everyone waiting to be somewhere—anywhere—but here. Airports are both the exciting first facet of a journey, and the grueling final obstacle before you finally get home. Bittersweet.
