On the 14th of June, NDWM Tamil Nadu joined over 500 domestic workers to celebrate International Domestic Workers Day at Loyal College in Chennai. During the first half of the day, presentations were given by keynote speakers such as MLAs, trade unionists, and domestic workers’ leaders. Domestic workers recounted stories of  empowerment and organization in the midst of overwork and exploitation. Speakers called for the Tamil Nadu government to include domestic workers under the 1948 Minimum Wage Act and for India to ratify ILO Convention 189: Decent Work for Domestic Workers.

In the afternoon, domestic workers split into breakout groups where they discussed issues such as raising the minimum wage, solving problems that domestic workers face in the workplace, the responsibilities of union leaders, and ways to strengthen union membership.

This podcast includes a brief conversation I had with Sr. Clara of NDWM about the importance of International Domestic Workers Day and the implications of this event for domestic workers.
